The purpose of this weekend is to raise some dollars, yes, but it also a weekend to raise awarness and support for D.C.’s only community bicycle shop. Chain Reaction Bike Shop educates youth about the role of the bicycle in sustainable communities, equips youth with job skills, and provides residents of Washington, DC, with safe, affordable, and pollution-free transportation.
The Youth Bike Shop, an entrepreneurial venture of Chain Reaction, hires youth mechanics to recycle donated bikes for resale and complete repairs for customers. All revenue generated supports educational workshops and the work of the youth mechanics.
Plus, you’ll also be hearing about the Women’s Garden Cycles Bike Tour. Three women are biking from D.C. to Montreal this summer/fall to document local alternatives to the industrial agricultural model - with dozens of stops along the way at urban community gardens, rural local foods movements, CSA farms, co-ops and projects in appropriate technology, etc. Our aim to connect such innovative projects along the east coast through thorough audio and visual documentation and a website… You’ll hear more about it if you come to these events!
So please, invite everyone and anyone and if you want to be involved with music, art, food, interpretive bicycle dancing number…let me know! EMAIL US - gardencycles@gmail.com
and we’ll coordinate art drop offs and musical numbers!
Thank you and look forward to seeing you all!
